We at NEEC, are mindful that the trauma and burden of living in a community struggling with, not only being a food desert, but the trauma of poisoned lead contaminated water has suppressed and locked many of the necessary skills needed for the future success of our children into a space of latency. This awareness has directed NEEC’s focus towards the development of several programs that offer cultural interventions, academic enhancements and creative empowerment for the life success of children and youth. Additionally, we are striving to instill in our children and youth the belief and resolve that they can make a difference in this world!
NEEC’s intent is to strengthen the literacy and mathematics skills of the children and youth in our communities by bridging instructions in technologies, such as Robotics, coding and chess with the spiritual healings of cultural enrichments, such as Dance, Music, Spoken Word and Art. Yet, we well understand that the emotional health of children must be addressed through a holistic approach, such as Kung Fu, Capoeira, Yoga and Mindfulness.
NEEC has partnered with Sylvester Broome Empowerment Village (SBEV), community members, children and families, and the nationally renowned Children’s Defense Fund Freedom School to bring two powerfully innovative programs to the children in Flint and Genesee County area, such as Club Freedom, a STEAM-focused After-School Program and the intensive literacy-focused model of the Children’s Defense Fund Freedom School program.
